QHow are Goddess hair extensions methods different from all the other methods I hear about? AGoddess extensions' services are very different from any salon. Hair extensions are rarely taught in cosmetology school, so, typically, a salon stylist either learns or takes a training class in one method of hair extensions like weaving, braided track or glued in track. There are a handful of well-marketed hair extensions training companies nationwide that offer very expensive training in various kinds of fusion (also known as glue, bonds, cold fusion) which involves gluing extension hair onto a client's hair. Several other companies offer training in metal ring application, all of which we have explored and either rejected or improved on. Goddess extensionists are experts in ALL the BEST hair extensions methods out there, so no matter who walks in the door, we understand all application/removal processes, not just the methods from one class we took. Goddess extensionists are taught in great detail about where hair extension hair originates, how to determine quality hair, the types of adhesives used, how to remove all extensions. Our methods have been inspected by dermatologists, and our clients stay with us for years so we see first hand how our methods affect thousands of heads of hair. After many years of experience, we have determined some non-negotiable requirements for the hair extensions methods we will perform:
QI really want extensions, but stylist says they will wreck my hair. AThere are a few reasons people hear this from their stylists, the main one is that it can be true! Stylists are seeing more and more people with hair extensions coming in for cut and color, and most popular extensions training companies around offer glue in the form of keratin protein, silicon or polyurethane. Stylists that voice this warning are usually talking about 'glue' extensions they have seen on clients that has been left to mat, tangle, and break off because these extensions are *supposed* to be left in for 4-6 months. Hair grows 0.5" per month, and after this amount of time the extension glue has bonded with the rest of the hair, and natural shedding leaves a heavy extension hanging on to tiny pieces of a client's hair and can be ripped out when brushed. The removal process on glue is also extremely damaging, because although the glue comes out easily when freshly applied, mixed with product like conditioners and heat, gums into the hair and requires base ingredients of acetone or rubbing alcohol to get out, and even then has to be ripped, combed or cut out. Other metal ring methods out there that stylists may have seen consist of thin copper rings than are too small to grip more than a tiny bit of hair, and again left for months with no adjustment to get ripped out by brushing. Or have metal so thin that it 'cuts' small pieces of a clients hair in everyday wear. Another reason stylists tell clients that extensions will ruin hair is that extensions clients don't come in as often for cuts or color (or go from getting full color foils to basic root touchups or partials) and this can impact a stylist who doesn't want to lose business.
QWill people be able to tell that I'm wearing extensions? AThe majority of clients want the most subtle, invisible look possible, and we do expert placement around cowlicks and in precision areas so that the extension attachments aren't seen, even with your hair up. We then finish by cutting and blending the extensions so that the overall look is seamless. When you see bad extensions, it's usually a result of bad placement (with any extension method) incorrect color/texture matching, and a bad cut (or no cut at all) If you go from very short hair (5 inches or less) then obviously those close to you will know something is up. However, anyone who has never met you will not be able to that the extensions aren't your very own hair. This being said, depending on how thin your hair is you may see a Goddess loc or track if the hair isn't styled properly. 99% of people won't notice. Platinum blonde hair (especially when it's thin) with locs are the most difficult to conceal. QMy hair has highlights in. Can you match them? Can I continue to get my highlights done? AIn over 2,500 people, we have never had a problem matching color and highlights. We will do custom coloring on extensions when necessary. There won't be any extensions on the top portion on your head, so this hair can be colored normally. Your colorist simply works around the extensions to re-color, and this is also very easy for them to do. We can also use extensions to give you highlights/lowlights without compromising your hair. QWill Goddess extensions ruin my hair? AThis is the biggest concern from clients. The methods we offer are the least damaging of any extension method on the market. We have thousands of formerly nervous clients who are very happy with the results, even after the extensions have come out. After trying every method possible we designed our own Goddess locs; which are tiny 4mm plastic coated nickel alloy rings with a silicon grip, and involves no sharp edges, and no heat or glue. The rings grip tight, yet open easily to slide the extension back up to your roots every four weeks. We use these rings for long term individual extension applications, and our own track (weft) application that requires maintenance sooner, but is less expensive. We have plenty of clients who would be happy to talk to you about their experiences. QCan African American clients get individual extensions? Does it work with our hair? AAfrican American client appointments are our biggest growth demographic-contrary to what most African American clients hear. Individual Goddess loc extensions and loc tracks are a fabulous low-damage alternative to bulky, uncomfortable weaves, and gives ladies an actual 'natural' look that is often long sought after. Many celebrities including Halle Berry now sport extensions because of the more natural appearance, and our talent for texture matching. We can get high quality yaki and yaki "natural perm' textures that mimic your hair perfectly, or use a high quality curl that offers a softer look and volume. We are also skilled in cutting the extensions to the exact look you want. **Individual locs can be brought up to the top of a clients head, but unlike weaves, SOME HAIR must be left out to cover locs at the top. For a look where the hair is coming out of the scalp-or for a texture unlike your own, we would need to do a partial or full lace wig application. |
QDo you do dreadlocks, braids or weaves? Aren't they low damage? ANo. Contrary to popular belief, braids, weaves, and sewn-in tracks are painful and itchy. They actually CAUSE thinning, breakage and hair loss, and we have a lot of clients who come to us in tears because of the damage braiding has done to their hair, especially thinning at the temples (traction alopecia.) A braided track also requires the track to be sewn on, which disables the track from lifting up and down into a high pony tail. With fine hair, the track is lumpy and obvious. Caucasian hair also tends to fall out of braids and the tracks fall out or tangle within a matter of weeks.
QI have very short hair, can I get extensions? AIf your hair is at least to your ears, you can get extensions, however, what you won't get is a one length look-it will have to be layered throughout, and styled specifically to blend in with the extensions. You have to be willing to do some extra flat ironing where your hair meets the longer hair to make this work. For shorter hair we can do a combination extensions/integration wig piece that will give you a one-length, more fluid appearance, but it will involve a small 3"x3" hair piece securely attached 24-7 with our exclusive locs, and matched to your own hair texture and color. The overall effect is incredible, but some clients don't like the idea of the piece. All we care about is that the final finished appearance is exactly what you want, and this is the only way to achieve this in some cases. QHow long will it take to add extensions to my own hair? AIt depends on what you want, and how thick your hair is. Individual locs take about 3 hours, loc track takes about 2 hours and temporary hair takes 45 minutes or less. For people with less hair (not necessarily fine hair) the appointments are shorter, for a lot of hair the appointments are longer. Maintenance appointments rarely go over an hour. QDo I need to buy special shampoos and conditioners? How often should I wash? AYou can use exactly the same products of your choice on your new hair that you would on your very own irreplaceable head of hair, but you will need to condition more as this is hair that no longer has a follicle. BE LIGHT on conditioners and heat near the roots with an individual loc application as this tends to degrade the bonds and turn the locs silver. We recommend Bumble and Bumble, WEN and Pureology products. We recommend washing no more than 3 times a week to keep the hair healthy. If you have oily hair/workout more often, this is fine, but your extensions may need to be replaced sooner. QCan I use a hair-dryer, hot rollers, flatirons and other styling equipment or curling iron on this hair? Can it be colored? AYes, you can use all of the above. We only use quality, real human hair. The hair can be colored red or darkened, but has to be tested before we recommend it be bleached or lightened. High heat on the locs will cause the bonds to break down, so it's important to keep heat away from the bonds (blow-dryers should be set to cool.) Loc track extensions need to be brushed gently, but heat has little effect. Always use a soft bristle brush with your hair, and be gentle if round brushing (never use a comb!) QHow long will my extensions last? AGoddess individual locs and loc track last about a year with monthly maintenance appointments (hair will stay nice for about 8-12 months, then you will require a redo, which is 50% of the original cost.) Temporary Hair lasts a few weeks to a month. You need to care for the extensions to get the most out of them, and budget $75-95 a month for maintenance. If you haven't come in for more than 7 weeks for a maintenance appointment, you will be charged the 50% redo fee, and we will have to remove all the extensions and start over. After a certain amount of time, the hair may also need replacing, as it tends to get dry-that being said, it's our goal to help you keep your extensions in for as long as you want them, in a manner cost effective to you. QDo you have a cosmetology license? Can you cut and color my own hair? AUnder section 7316 of the California Cosmetology and Barbering Regulations, there is no requirement for our stylists to have a license, however we do have licensed stylists as well who can do this for you as part of your extensions service. QWill the extensions fall out easily? Can I bath, shower, swim, go out in the wind and rain, and play sports in my new extensions? AWe could pick you up by your hair extensions, that's how secure they are. (it would be painful though!) Your new hair will look as fabulous wet as real hair does, although the joins may show a little in water if your hair is on the thinner side. You can wash and style your extensions exactly as you would your own hair (do be a little gentler) Extensive water exposure will loosen fusion extensions though-so dry carefully after. If you swim a lot, we recommend you wear a swim cap. QDo you take every client that wants extensions? AAbsolutely not. We won top 10 Best of Citysearch for Hair Extensions and Replacement in the Bay Area through votes from hundreds of clients and former clients, but we have also gotten some negative reviews from clients we should not have taken, because they were impossible to make happy despite our every effort, and although this is a part of dealing with the general public, we have become much more selective. This is our art work, and we have a 90% success rate in keeping happy clients, which is very important to us. If someone has a situation where we can't help them, we will respectfully decline the service. If someone is unsure about getting the extensions, or is having trouble understanding the process, we will recommend they continue to do research on their own, or find another stylist. Periodically, we come across women whose expectations are above and beyond what we can do for them, and we have learned that is it not worth the time, expense and let down involved on both sides. We've worked very hard to provide a great deal of education on this website, as well as care in the consultation process, and it is integral to our work as artists to make as many people satisfied with this experience as we possibly can.
