Amy Cleveland-Winner-Aug, 2008 After graduating from college in three years, I felt lucky to be getting an extra year, but now things seem even since I feel like I have lost the last year of my life. Just after my 22nd birthday I was diagnosed with stage two borderline three breast cancer, and fought through 6 months of chemo only to find out that I had failed. My tumor was 10 times bigger than it was at diagnosis (from 2x3 cm to 12x13 cm) and had attached to my chest wall. For the first time I had to put my optimism to the side and accept the very real possibility that I might not get better. I moved to another city away from my job and husband (who is in the military so couldn’t come with me) to do radiation and pill form chemo which thanks to that in conjunction with surgery saved my life. Now at 23 years old I have to learn how to function with a genetic disorder that can cause many more cancers (BRCA) where times of wellness feel like they are at a premium. For so long I could barely recognize myself and looked at other people my age and felt so far away from them. With a lymphodema sleeve on my puffy right arm, one less breast and many scars, I know I will never see the same girl in the mirror that I did before, but maybe that’s ok. Because after speaking with so many people living with cancer and other diseases I have realized that everyone goes through things in their lives that test their strength and knowledge in who they are, and I feel like I have made it through and am so much more today because of it. Having always been described as the tall girl with the long brown hair, I have struggled with the hair loss probably more than I would like to admit. I know that the integration hair replacement system would allow me to step away from being “the sick girl” and back into the girl with the long brown hair that I would love nothing more than to be again.
