Shauna Bender Winner-April 2008 The past year I have experienced more than I ever thought I would at my age. Weeks after my high school graduation, I found the first signs of what I now know was cancer. A few months later, my plans for going away to college were put on hold and replaced with months of grueling chemotherapy and radiation. In the first essay I entered last quarter, I wrote about all the sadness and depression hair loss has caused me, and I know that must be how every other applicant feels. We've all gone through something that has tested our strength, and at times, caused us great pain. However, despite all the sickness, the depression, and everything else cancer causes a person, I do have to say that I have gained a greater appreciation for life and the people in mine. I've also found a deep connection to a cause in which I plan to continually help. Since completing my chemotherapy and radiation, I have been dedicated to raising money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. So far, I have raised a total of $ 2,575 in 3 and a half months, and plan to raise even more. I want to make the effort to do my part in helping present and future people diagnosed with blood cancers. Even so, everyday I still have to deal with the insecurities of hair loss that cancer has left with me, an ever so constant reminder of the the hardest battle I've ever had to fight. As I slowly watch my hair grow back I imagine how much these extensions would change my world for the better; to be able to look in the mirror and see my old self again is something I have been waiting for since this all started. as I hope to be doing for others as I continue to raise money to help in the fight against cancer.

Hi Ladies! Long time no speak to since you coiffed my hair last July Anyway, thank you for posting my before and after pictures on your fabulous website (in the African American section) It occurred to me that I forgot to show you my headshots after you made me beautiful -- the next day after our appointment, I flew to L.A. to have a former actor (Kevyn Major Howard from Full Metal Jacket) take my photos. Later, after about a week of auditions, I successfully booked three African American commercials, was hired by an agent in SF and THEN did several other voiceover jobs during the year! Not bad for adding some hair on my head huh! You are truly the BEST!!!Here is the link...sorry it's the full shoot, but at least you can see your excellent work on how my hair came out:
